The top 5 Nike Commercials since 2000

Put the Michael Jordan-Spike Lee, “Bo Knows” Jackson, or any and other 20th century Nike commercial aside; as this list highlights the top Nike commercials since 2000.

Nike (and for some, Wieden + Kennedy) has mastered the art of packing an emotionally loaded story into the form of a less than a minute commercial. These commercials either mark a point in time, or remind us why we love sports and put us into a state of nostalgia.

5. Rise/What Should I Do – Lebron James – 2010

I think anyone around the time of LeBron deciding where he was going to take his talents in 2010 would remember this commercial leading up to his decision. This commercial takes a variety of genres and packs it into one, to help us sense how overwhelming this probably was for LeBron. The Charles Barkley “I am not a role model” Easter egg was genius too.

4. Maybe Its My Fault – Michael Jordan - 2008

While it may not the best Jordan commercial of all time, this one helps put the grit to any successful athlete. The Michael Jordan voice over with the pauses and emphasis on certain words staples this one in to the list.

3. Re2pect – Derek Jeter - 2014

Being a Chiefs fan, I hate to say Jason Garrett of the Dallas Cowboys was the one who reminded me of this commercial, as he “tipped his cap” to Jason Witten and his retirement. From Phil Jackson in a limo, to the NY firemen, everyone in this commercial may seem busy, but gives a moment of their time to tip their cap to Jeter’s influence on the game. Seeing everyone else stop to pay their respect, has us, the viewers, stop to appreciate #2 as well.

2. Red Sox World Series Commercial – 2004

It was hard not to put this #1. We follow a Red Sox fan since childhood endure the years of the curse and see a glimpse of it cured through a crack of the bat and the year dated 2004. This clip is wisely crafted to depict each decade’s culture, all while reminding you Sox fans were still waiting, until they did it in 2004.

1. Ripple – Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods – 2015

This commercial is not just to show Tiger passing a metaphorical baton off to Rory, but for us, the fans, to depart from those record breaking Tiger days, and be reminded we are moving further away from the days of young Tiger. Pretty grounding. Plus, the child actor for 4-year old Rory couldn’t have been better for a combo of looks and silky swing.

Honorable Mentions:

Chicago Cubs: Someday – 2016 They just had to put Harry Carray’s voice at the end… Too good.
